Journey

Finally, a new black and white piece! Who are they? Where are they going? I'm not sure, but this odd group popped into my head the moment I saw the Illustration Friday challenge this week, so they had to be drawn!

A pretty new black and white piece, inspired by Illustration Friday! I'm experimenting with different methods of shading and so far I prefer using Painter over Photoshop. I enjoyed playing with the chalk and the watercolor brushes.

New Projects!
Posted By :Date :Laura | 02-27-2014
I attended the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators this past weekend, and it was fantastic! I especially liked the Small Group Review where I had the opportunity to speak with Lily Malcom, Executive Art Director & Associate Publisher of Dial Books for Young Readers. One of my other favorite parts were the breakout sessions that occurred on Saturday. The first one I attended was called Implementing Self Promotion for Illustrators, and it was led by Laurent Lin, an Art Director at Simon and Schuster. His talk included some…

I updated my website - I keep finding tempting new templates on WordPress; this is the zeeBizzcard Theme by ThemeZee, and as I am in the middle of a business card redesign, I thought it would be a good time to change some things around on my site. I now have social media links to your left, which will be awesome for anyone wanting to connect with me other places online. I also love being able to see the most recent blog posts on every page. It also has great…

Newest Art Challenge: Spreading The Love!
Posted By :Date :Laura | 06-23-2013
Also known as: Teaching! [gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="2"] Though my reasons for attending grad school were many, my main goal was to eventually teach art and illustration. I am happy to say that my journey towards being a teaching artist has begun. I have classes listed at 171 Cedar Arts Center, an awesome non-profit in Corning NY that is dedicated to bringing the arts to our community. The two classes I submitted were "Creature Creation", a monster drawing class, and "Art of the Comic Book", a class that explores the…

New Portfolio Setup
Posted By :Date :Laura | 11-29-2012
So, I have decided to finally cull my portfolio. I have been listening to a lot of artist podcasts lately, (particularly Chris Oatley - heart his website so much!) and a common theme is simplifying your portfolio. Even though I love my traditional paintings and drawings, from a job hunting perspective, I can totally appreciate the sense in this tactic. I will still be posting sketching, painting and drawing, but I've decided that all work not directly relevant to getting illustration work will go into my blog as posts, and…
